Sonia Kovalevsky was a Russian mathematician who made noteworthy contributions to math in the areas of analysis, partial differential equations, and mechanics, for which she won the Prix Bordin award. She was the first major Russian female mathematician, the first woman member of the Russian Academy of Sciences where she worked as an editor, and the first modern European woman to attain full professorship.
Although society at that time did not allow women to succeed in academia, Kovalevsky had positive mentors in her life that supported her pursuit of a career in mathematics.
